Physical training

Physical training in Kyokushin should develop the capacity required to support technique. Strength, endurance and resilience are therefore means rather than ends in themselves.

Functional capacity

Training needs to support stable posture, efficient power transfer, balance in motion and the ability to keep working as fatigue rises. Bodyweight exercises, technical repetitions, stability work and progressively more demanding contact can contribute when used with a clear purpose.

Makiwara and other controlled loading can also expose weaknesses in alignment and power transfer. Load should not be used to replace correct technique.

Conditioning is adaptation

Body conditioning is gradual adaptation to contact, not self-punishment. Forearms, legs and trunk need loading that preserves function and gives the body time to recover.

Endurance and breathing

As fatigue rises it becomes harder to maintain guard, balance, hip action and controlled breathing. Physical capacity is therefore useful when it helps the practitioner preserve technical quality.

Progression comes through continuity, gradually increased load and recovery. Capacity is built over the long term.
