Tameshiwari
Tameshiwari (試し割り), test breaking, is used in Kyokushin to test whether structure, direction, contact point and power transfer work in a clearly bounded task. It is not a separate demonstration of raw strength.
Technique before brute force
The ability to transfer power through a target depends on a connected chain: anchoring to the ground, legs and hips, a stable trunk, correct alignment and an appropriate striking surface. If one part collapses, effectiveness falls while injury risk rises.
Breathing and timing help stabilize the body at the right moment without choking acceleration through premature tension.
What the test does not show
Tameshiwari does not test a moving opponent, tactical adaptation or timing in dynamic fighting. It therefore does not replace kumite. Its value lies in a narrower question: can a technique deliver force in a controlled and reproducible way against a defined target?
Progression and safety
Breaking requires gradual preparation, suitable materials and instructor judgement. Difficulty should follow technical maturity; pain or prestige are not measures of quality.
