Grading Requirements¶
Introduction¶
This page gathers the grading requirements in Kyokushin karate and serves as the entry point for each individual grade.
The purpose is to make the progression clear from the first kyu grade to dan level. Each grade should be understood as a step in training, where new content is added while previous content must become more stable, more controlled, and more usable.
How to read the grading requirements¶
The grading requirements should not be understood as a standalone list of techniques.
Each grade describes:
- what the student trains at the current level
- which technical elements are included
- what physical and mental development is expected
- what the instructor should pay particular attention to
- which mistakes are common at this level
This means that a higher grade always builds on previous grades. The student is therefore expected not only to know the new content, but also to show better quality in what has already been introduced.
Kyu grades¶
The kyu grades form the basic progression from beginner to preparatory black belt level.
Dan grades¶
The dan grades do not mean that training is finished. They indicate that the student has reached a level where the foundation must be carried with greater maturity, responsibility, and technical quality.
Progression¶
Progression between grades is based on the student gradually developing:
- technical form
- balance and body control
- correct use of stances
- basic strikes, blocks, and kicks
- kata and movement patterns
- endurance and physical capacity
- discipline, concentration, and self-control
- understanding of dojo etiquette and responsibility
The higher the grade, the more the student must show that technique can not only be performed, but also maintained during movement, physical pressure, and assessment.
Summary¶
The grading requirements show what is included at each level, but also what the grade is meant to develop.
Each grade should therefore be read as part of a larger whole: technique is built step by step, the body is gradually strengthened, and the student’s understanding of Kyokushin deepens through regular training.
